New courses for 2023-2024!

For the last year or two, we took a sabbatical from teaching here at Gaucha Translations. This year, we are back with a new set of courses. Both will focus on translation.

General information

Gaucha Translations courses are taught over zoom, by meeting at a specific time each week. There is homework assigned and it is expected to be turned in a few days before each class. The issues that come up in the homework are discussed in every class. Participants can also bring up issues from their own homework. This helps people improve their skills and understand translation concepts in a practical way. There is more information on books, modality of teaching and other issues on this page.

New: Medical and education topics (October to November 2023)

Over the years, interpreters in medical and educational settings have asked for a translation course just for them. The course will cover translation from English into Spanish only, including some principles on Spanish writing, using materials specific to medical and educational settings. Each week, participants will have an assignment to complete, and the results will be discussed in the next class session.

There is more information about this course on this page. It will be taught on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:00 pm Pacific time, from October 4 to November 29. This includes a couple of rain check days if needed.

Advanced English/Spanish translation (January to May 2024)

I have been teaching this course since 2016, and all my students have been satisfied. Many have passed the ATA certification exam, and others have improved their interpreting skills because they have improved their congruity judgment.

This is a twelve-session course, where participants will team up with each other to translate and review each other’s work every week. The results will be discussed in the next class session. We will also discuss translation theory topics and provide an introduction to English and Spanish writing.

This course includes translation from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English. There is more information about this course on this page. It will be taught on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:00 pm Pacific time, from January 17 to May 22. This includes a couple of rain check days if needed.

In closing…

After my sabbatical, I am coming back with fresh ideas and renewed purpose. I look forward to helping more translators launch their careers with solid skills!
